Important: Sunday Tour Schedule Change

There has been a slight change in the start time for the “Babushkas & Hard Hats” tour scheduled for Sunday, August 3rd. The bus will depart the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott Hotel promptly at 8:15 AM. Please meet in the lobby at 8:00 AM so that we will have time to get everyone on the bus. No refunds will be provided on Sunday, 8/3. If you need to cancel due to a valid reason, please let the FEEFHS registration desk know on Friday, 8/1 so that we may find someone to take your place. We are bound by the counts we gave to the bus company and for the lunch. The tour is SOLD OUT. There is a waiting list. Bus will return to the Marriott at approximately 2:30 p.m.

2008 FEEFHS Conference: Optional Tours

Along with the two full days of informative lectures, the 2008 FEEFHS conference will feature two separate optional tours.

Friday, August 1st – Tour to the Nationality Rooms, University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning, and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

An optional tour of the one-of-a-kind Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh’s impressive Cathedral of Learning will be take place on Friday afternoon, led by Mifflin Township Historical Society President and local author/historian Daniel Burns.

The tour will also include a stop at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Library and a visit to the Pennsylvania Department, headed by Marilyn Holt who will also present lectures on beginning genealogy and sources for Western Pennsylvania research at the conference.

Cost: $25 per person

Sunday, August 3rd – Tour of Pittsburgh’s Ethnic Neighborhoods: The Rivers of Steel Babushkas and Hard Hats Tour

The conference ends on Sunday with an optional tour of Pittsburgh’s ethnic neighborhoods. From 9 am to 2 pm enjoy the Rivers of Steel “Babushkas and Hard Hats” tour, listed in the New York Times #1 best-selling book, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die in the USA and Canada.

The tour presents the region’s rich industrial and cultural heritage as the steelmaking capital of the world. From the heights of Mount Washington into the heart of the Monongahela Valley, the “Babushkas and Hard Hats” Tour traces the experiences of the immigrants that poured into the region. See the sights, hear the sounds, and sample one Pittsburgh’s sweetest traditions – the “Cookie Table.”

Following the tour, participants will be treated to an ethnic lunch served at Bulgarian Macedonian Educational & Cultural Center in West Homestead.

Cost: $55 per person (includes lunch)

Book early as space is limited. Tours are NOT included in the conference registration package!
